Meet our Members – Dr. Bhekuzulu Khumalo

To highlight AHKGA members, we will be posting a “Meet our Members” segment to the AHKGA website to learn more about the AHKGA community. In this post, we are highlighting Dr. Bhekuzulu Khumalo the Malawi Report Card Team Leader and member of the JEDI Committee!

Dr. Bhekuzulu Khumalo is a Lecturer in Sports Science at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST). He was also the Vice-President Technical of the Public Universities Staff Sports Association of Malawi (PUSSAM), from 2021 to 2024. Additionally, he holds technical and advisory roles with institutions such as Cricket Malawi, the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC), Major Sports Consultancy Africa, and the Bulawayo Chiefs Football Club management committee. Dr. Khumalo’s primary role as a Lecturer in Sports Science includes teaching, mentoring, program coordination, conducting research, and participating in institutional leadership. He also engages in fitness testing and measurement for professional teams, thesis supervision, sports consultancy, and advancing sports education through leadership in professional associations and committees.

Dr. Khumalo’s expertise lies in sports science, with a focus on:

  1. Adapted Physical Activity: Promoting inclusive physical activity programs for diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities.
  2. Sports Coaching: Developing effective coaching methodologies to enhance athlete performance and development.
  3. Physical Education: Creating and implementing comprehensive curricula to foster lifelong physical activity and well-being.

He is also passionate about community health promotion through physical activity and research in kinesiology and wheelchair basketball participation trends.

As the Malawi Report Card Leader, Dr. Khumalo coordinates a multidisciplinary team to evaluate physical activity indicators and prepare Malawi’s contribution to the Global Matrix initiative. His responsibilities include:

  1. Conducting research and data analysis.
  2. Assigning grades based on evidence to assess physical activity among children and adolescents in Malawi.
  3. Overseeing timelines and adherence to standards for report preparation.

Previously, he contributed to developing Zimbabwe’s Report Cards on Physical Activity and Nutrition for Children and Youth, with roles in research, data analysis, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Khumalo enjoys reading, learning new skills, listening to and singing music, and engaging in community-building activities. He is also passionate about promoting health and fitness through community initiatives. An avid participant in athletics, Dr. Khumalo enjoys middle- and long-distance coaching, supported by his World Athletics (WA) coaching and coach education certifications. He also engages in various sports and physical activities that promote fitness and well-being.

Dr. Khumalo is the founder of the Major Sports Institute Africa, which aims to empower coaches across the continent with technology-driven performance analysis solutions. He is a reviewer for internationally recognized journals and has contributed to impactful research projects in sports science. Dr. Khumalo’s plans include expanding research on physical activity trends and fitness levels in children, elite athletes, and persons with disabilities while continuing to advocate for inclusivity in sports.

Dr. Khumalo plans to further develop sports science capacity in Malawi and beyond, with a particular focus on inclusivity and physical activity initiatives. He looks forward to continued contributions to research on adapted physical activity, sports coaching, and physical education to promote a healthier and more active population.
